Why is coaching key to sporting achievement?

 

Results in sport like anything else are determined by our actions and attitudes i.e. what we do and the way in which we do it (collectively referred to as behaviour). A small change in behaviour leads to a small change in results. Dramatic or consistent improvements in results may require significant or precise changes in behaviour.

 

And what if you are trying but not getting the results you want as quickly as you want. What if you have conflicting goals or not totally sure what you really want? Or perhaps you don’t know what the most important changes are?

 

Behaviour patterns are the result of internal processes largely programmed from ages 0 to 7 years. One example is the stimulus response mechanism which continually responds to external and internal stimulus, whether it’s to the smell of your favourite food, the sight of a ball coming towards you, or to the thought of doing something. The response is automatic and unconscious and mostly remains outside of conscious awareness. It instantaneously affects behaviour e.g. saliva production, motivation, or less positive actions and attitudes such as anger or anxiety. It’s the collective effect of many internal processes programmed at a young age without the benefit of your current experience that drives much of our behaviour and therefore results today.

 

Assisting you to create massively compelling goals and the behaviours needed to quickly achieve them, whilst being congruent in the context of who you are and other aspects of life is the role of your Sports Achievement Coach.

 

A good Sports Achievement Coach will also assist you to swiftly adopt the required behaviours by aligning internal resources to support your current direction with the benefit of your full knowledge and experience, resolving conflicts and creating momentum. This will enable you to achieve bigger goals more easily and have a positive knock on effect to other areas of life. The more unconsciously you move towards your goals the easier it will be. By utilising both your unconscious and conscious resources you and your team can rapidly achieve the outstanding results you really want.
